KISS ME KATE
Auditions for Tarpon Art’s summer musical, the Cole Porter classic Kiss Me Kate, will be Sunday, May 7 and Monday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum, 100 Beekman Lane. Inspired by The Taming of the Shrew, it tells the tale of musical theater actors, Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi, who were once married and are now performing opposite each other in the roles of Petruchio and Katherine in a Broadway-bound musical version of William Shakespeare’s play. Already on poor terms, the pair begin an all-out emotional war mid-performance that threatens the production’s success. The only thing keeping the show together are threats from a pair of gangsters, who have come to collect a gambling debt from the show’s Lucentio, Bill Calhoun. In classic musical comedy fashion, slapstick madness ensues before everything is resolved. The show is famous for such songs as “Another Op’nin, Another Show”, “Why Can’t You Behave”, and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.” The original show won numerous Tony Awards including Best Original Musical, Best Author, Best Original Score, and Best Costume Design. The various revivals won numerous Tony’s for both its performers and its technical staff. Principal roles are open to various ages and vocal ranges. Performers wishing to be considered for solo singing roles should prepare at least sixteen bars of a song in a classic Broadway style, and should bring either sheet music for the accompanist or a CD of an accompaniment track. A CD player will be provided. No a capella singing please. Readings will be from the script. Performance dates are: July 14-16, 21-23, 2017.
