When cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine remarries, he and his new wife, Ruth, discover that they are haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira, who was summoned by an eccentric “happy medium”. Mayhem ensues as personalities clash, only to be interrupted when tragedy strikes, and Ruth is accidentally killed. When Ruth “passes over” she joins Elvira, and the two “blithe spirits” haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
